Brandon Ventour RaceSalt River High School heads into this weekend’s state track and field finals with at least one of its athletes in position to bring home the school’s first-ever championship title in the sport.

Senior Brandon Ventour, 18, has dominated most of his events throughout the season and qualified for the high jump, triple jump, 100 meters and 110 meter hurdles during the Canyon Athletic Association’s Division 1 championships this Friday and Saturday.

Ventour has the CAA’s top high jump (6’7”) and triple jump (42’5”) results. He’s ranked third in the state for high jump; Cameron Crandall, a senior at Canyon Del Oro High School in Oro Valley, Ariz., who hit a personal record of 7 feet at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division II championship May 3.

A transfer to SRHS this year, the 6’1” athlete also played football and basketball this school year. This being Ventour’s first year playing football—ever—he was recognized as Most Improved player.

The 16-member SRHS team, which includes athletes brought up from Salt River Elementary School, has a shot at taking second place at the men’s high school level.

Watch the SRHS Eagles compete during the state preliminaries Friday, May 12, at 5 p.m. at Valley Christian High School in Chandler. The championship meet is Saturday, May 13, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Queen Creek High School.
