There is a current measles investigation in Maricopa County; the following information is being released in coordination with SRPMIC health leaders to inform you about the situation and the measles virus, what can be done to keep children and families safe, and what to do if you believe measles is present in your household.

This is a great opportunity to make sure your child’s immunizations are up-to-date and on file with their school.

INCIDENT INFORMATION

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health and the Arizona Department of Health Services learned that a teenage international traveler competing in the recent World Hip Hop Dance Championship at the Arizona Grand Resort has tested positive for measles and may have exposed others to the disease.

August 10, 2019

  • Arizona Grand Resort & Spa (8000 Arizona Grand Pkwy, Phoenix), all day
  • Arizona Mills Mall (5000 S Arizona Mills Circle, Tempe), 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Gila River Arena for World Hip HopInternational Dance Championships (9400 W Maryland Ave, Glendale), 6:30 p.m.

August 11, 2019

  • Arizona Grand Resort & Spa (8000 Arizona Grand Pkwy, Phoenix), through 7 p.m.
  • Arizona Mills Mall (5000 S Arizona Mills Circle, Tempe), 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Harkins Theatre (Arizona Mills Mall) 12:45-6 p.m.
    • Includes Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw showings at 1:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
  • Sky Harbor International Airport (Terminal 2), 5-10 p.m.

 

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms typically appear 7-12 days after exposure to measles but may take up to 21 days. For this reason, anyone who may have been exposed should watch for signs and symptoms of measles until September 2.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Begin with fever (101 F or higher), red, watery eyes, cough and runny nose
  • Followed by a rash that is red, raised, and blotchy. The rash typically begins on the face at the hairline and moves down the body. The rash may last for 5-6 days and may turn brownish.
  • People who have depressed immune systems may have a rash that does not fit the description above.

 

WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE MEASLES

Call your primary care provider or the SRPMIC Public Health Nurse at 480-362-5545.

 

ABOUT MEASLES

  • Measles is a highly-contagious, vaccine-preventable viral illness spread through coughing, sneezing, and contact with secretions from the nose, mouth, and throat of an infected individual. 
  • Measles virus can survive in the air for hours and may be transmitted to susceptible individuals even after an infected individual is no longer in the room/area. 
  • You may be protected from measles if you were immunized with 2 doses of MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccine or if you have previously had the disease. Healthcare providers are required to report suspect cases of measles to Maricopa County Department of Public Health.
